ACTNews, ACEH BESAR – The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has had severe impacts on low-income communities. Responding to this, Aksi Cepat Tanggap (ACT) Aceh distributed food packages to the needy on the outskirts of Aceh through Free Food Operation (OPG).

One of the distribution locations was Pulau Nasi in Aceh Besar Regency. On the Indonesian Independence Day, ACT and Masyarakat Relawan Indonesia (MRI) volunteers visited Nasi Island to deliver food packages to impoverished families.

“Alhamdulillah, in addition to the food distribution on Nasi Island, we also gave sponsorship to Muslim preachers. Nasi Island was chosen as one of the distribution locations because it lies in the peripheral areas of the country. It takes hours to get there by boat,” explained Fitdha Khairadini from MRI Banda Aceh.

ACT and MRI also provided food packages for fire survivors in Balui Village in Aceh Besar. The fire survivors are currently staying in tents. In addition, some of them suffer from medical conditions that require immediate treatments.

On the same day when ACT and MRI departed for Nasi Island, ACT Aceh received a text message about the condition of two families in Meuraxa District of Banda Aceh who have no income. Some of the family members have to be self-isolated for contracting COVID-19.

Moving quickly, ACT and MRI Banda Aceh immediately provided food assistance to these two families after receiving the news.

ACT Aceh Branch Manager Zulfurqan said that the Free Food Operation was a real effort to assist the community in the midst of the pandemic. The food distributions were able to be done thanks to the benefactors who donated their wealth ACT.

"The Free Food Operation in Aceh is ready to help not only during special occasions like the Independence Day. Rather, it will continue and expand its reach," he explained. []
