ACT-MRI Helps Kuantan Sengingi Flood Victims

ACTNews, KUANTAN SINGINGI – Flashfloods hit Gunung Toar sub-district, Kuantan Sengigi (Kuansing), Riau, on Wednesday (2/27) morning. The flood drowned around 300 houses along Desa Petapahan River. The water reached 3 to 5-meter-high.

The flood also washed away five houses, damaged a bridge, and killed dozens of cattle. The material loss was estimated to reach IDR 100 million.

Aksi Cepat Tanggap (ACT) Riau Branch Manager, Othman Razali, reported that most of the locals’ belongings were lost and damaged by the flashfloods. “They did not manage to salvage their belongings because the water came so suddenly in the span of five minutes,” he explained. The victims evacuated to their neighbors and relatives’ houses which were not affected by the flood.

ACT Riau and Masyarakat Relawan Indonesia (MRI) Teluk Kuantan immediately performed emergency response actions. MRI volunteers helped the locals to evacuate. ACT Riau also opened a humanitarian post and public kitchen.

“As the first measures, we opened a humanitarian post and public kitchen, and we also distributed clothes and groceries. On Thursday afternoon, the volunteers from MRI Pekanbaru will also join the volunteers from MRI Teluk Kuantan on the location,” said Razali.

He added that the region is often hit by floods. Last November, floods also hit Kuansing Regency. A number of schools were drowned, halting the educational process in dozens of primary and secondary schools.

Last December, ACT Riau also visited a number of regions that were hit by the annual floods, such as in Gunung Sahilan Sub-District Kampar Regency, Pangean and Cerenti Sub-District in Kuantan Singigi Regency and Pasir Penyu Sub-District in Indragiri Regency. The floods were caused by the torrential rains that fell.

Until Thursday (2/28), early warning from Indonesian Bureau of Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) showed that moderate to heavy rains followed by storm and thunder will happen in Pekanbaru City, Kuantan Singingi, and most regions in Riau. []
