ACTNews, GAZA – Happiness spread throughout Gaza as the chant of the takbirat filled the air. Children played and adults filled the streets as if they had forgotten about the conflict and hardships. They all gathered to welcome the festive day of Eid.
Like other people, Leila* also welcomed the day of Eid with utter joy although she can’t move freely like other children due to the cerebral palsy that she has suffered since she was born.
Leila is now 25 years old, but her body is so small and skinny. This Eid, Aksi Cepat Tanggap (ACT) brought her gifts to bring her happiness and fulfill her needs.
“This is one of the girls that received the Zakat-ul-Fitr. She was born with cerebral palsy and she needs aid like food and diapers. We are also looking for benefactors that are willing to support Leila’s needs in the future,” said an ACT local volunteer in Gaza. Leila’s smile spread widely upon receiving the gifts.
Like Leila, Khaled* was also welcoming the Eid in happiness. He was going to visit his relatives and neighbors to spread the joy of Eid and strengthen their bonds. His physical disabilities do not stop him from enjoying the celebration.
Khaled needs crutches to walk because one of his leg was amputated.
Not only Khaled and Leila, but hundreds of other people with disabilities in Gaza received Zakat-ul-Fitr from the people of Indonesia in the form of cash aid on Friday (5/31).
“We aim to benefit 200 families with disabled members to whom the zakat-ul-fitr will be distributed. Hopefully, this zakat can help them to welcome this Eid with joy and happiness,” said Andi Noor Faradiba of Global Humanity Response (GHR) – ACT,
The number of the people with disabilities in Palestine has been increasing. WAFA Palestinian News Agency reported in 2018 that, in ten years, the number of people with disabilities had sharply risen since 2007, from 3.7 % to 6.8%
This was approximately caused by the Israeli blockade since 2007 and three wars with Israel that caused thousands of casualties. Not only killing thousands, the war also caused severe injuries and permanent disabilities.
