Condition of Honorary Teachers in Central Lampung during the Covid-19 Pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced teaching and learning activities to be carried out online. Many parents think there are no learning activities because their children do not go to school. Many of them do not pay tuition, and this affects the salaries of honorary teachers.

ACTNews, CENTRAL LAMPUNG – On Tuesday (7/27/2021), Global Zakat-ACT had the opportunity to convey the mandate of generous friends to honorary teachers at an Islamic high school in Way Pengubuan District, Central Lampung Regency. The teachers revealed their condition during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Saiful Bahri, one of the teachers, said that teaching in private Islamic-based schools is indeed burdensome. Apart from the burden of online school, the income earned does not match the amount that must be spent. He must manage his money well and look for additional income.

Another teacher, Yusrotun, said the salary she gets depends on the students' tuition. Because of online school, many parents deliberately do not pay tuition because they think their children have never attended school or there are no teaching and learning activities.

“My salary is often reduced, and the payment is also late. I am confused about how to get additional money. I have to pay tuition, monthly fees, and registration fees for my child, who is currently in his fourth semester at university,” she said, Tuesday (7/27/2021).

Mulyani (a teacher) explained that school income from student tuition has decreased. Some students pay, and some don't. They need an internet quota to carry out online school. However, the school does not provide internet quota fees, so the teacher must buy it by themselves.

Other teachers, Joko Kusbiyanto and Sugeng Karwito revealed the same problem. The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on school administration. The school has reduced tuition fees, so they have to cut the salaries of honorary teachers. The current income of honorary teachers is insufficient for their daily needs.

To help ease the burden on teachers, Global Zakat-ACT provided financial assistance and food packages. Hopefully, through this assistance, the teachers will continue to be enthusiastic about educating the nation's children even in challenging conditions. []
