ACTNews, LUMAJANG – The eruption of Mount Semeru in December 2021 damaged houses, places of worship, as well as educational facilities, including the Fatihul Ulum Quran School in the Kobokan Curah Hamlet, one of the areas that were severely affected by the volcanic eruption.
Fatihul Ulum Quran School was founded by Ustaz Imam Safi'i and has 70 students from the Kobokan Curah Hamlet. Initially, the classes were held in Ustaz Imam Safi'i's house, but over time, his house could no longer accommodate the number of students who came to study.
“I built the school using my personal savings assisted by four of my colleagues. Because the students are free of charge, we have no cash to rebuild the school," said Ustaz Imam Safi'i.
Sadly, a year after its establishment, the school was wrecked by the volcanic eruption. Its roof and front porch were ruined. The doors and windows were also washed away by the lahar. The ruins of the zinc roof are scattered around the school.
“Because the building is no longer usable, the Fatihul Ulum students now learn in tents and sometimes in a small mosque in Penanggal village,” added Safi’i.
Amazingly, despite having to move from one place to another, the students’ enthusiasm never relents. Every day, they flock to learn to read the Quran and their number keeps increasing. "We hope to be able to renovate the school so the students can have a permanent classroom again,” he prayed.
Through the Indonesia Dermawan website, the Aksi Cepat Tanggap (ACT) Branch in Jemher endeavors to help rebuild Fatihul Ulum in a safe area. Click the widget below to contribute to the reconstruction of the school.
