Flash Floods Ravage Batu and Malang Cities

Flash floods hit Batu City, East Java, after high-intensity rain in the upstream area of Brantas Watershed (DAS) on the slopes of Mount Arjuno.

ACTNews, MALANG – Batu City, East Java, was struck by devastating flash floods after high-intensity rain in the upstream area of Brantas Watershed (DAS) on the slopes of Mount Arjuno, Thursday (11/4/2021).

Based on the report received by ACTNews, the current of Brantas tributary that passes through Sumber Brantas Village, Bumiaji District, Batu City, was observed to be flowing rapidly, carrying mud, stones, and pieces of trees and building debris.

Iqrok Wahyu Perdana from ACT Malang team explained that currently, flash floods have affected 5 villages in Bumiaji District, Batu City, namely Sumber Brantas, Bulu Kerto, Tulung Rejo, Padang Rejo, and Sidomulyo Villages.

“Yes, until now, it is reported that there have been five villages affected by the flash floods,” Iqrok explained.

In addition to Batu City, flash floods also ravaged Malang City, East Java. Various public facilities are reported to be damaged by the floods including bridges and a tourist attraction Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan.

Iqrok continued, many residents have started to evacuate to safer places with their basic belongings. Most of their goods and basic need supplies can no longer be used since many of them have been swept away by the swift current of the floods. Currently, people are urgently in need of direct assistance.

“There are many infants, children, and elderly people who require assistance including food aid, blankets, warm clothes, and medicines at the evacuation posts,” said Iqrok.[]
