Flood Drowned Three Sub-Districts in Tasikmalaya

ACTNews, TASIKMALAYA – Heavy rain that had been falling since Monday (11/5) afternoon had caused the overflowing of Pasanggrahan River, leading to a flood that drowned three sub-districts: Cipatujah, Karangnunggal and Culamega.

Until Tuesday (11/6) evening, Aksi Cepat Tanggap (ACT) Tasikmalaya’s Emergency Response team reported that the flood had killed six of the locals in the three sub-districts. “Five of them have been found; one is still missing,” said Fauzi, Coordinator of ACT Tasikmalaya’s Emergency Response team.

Apart from casualties, the flood also destroyed a number of structures, including around 500 houses. The bridge that connects Cipatujah Village to Cindum and Ciheuras Villages was destroyed

Regional Disaster Mitigation Board (BPBD) Tasikmalaya reported that the worst-hit area was Culamega sub-district. The height of the flood reached 2 meters, reaching the roofs of the locals’ houses. The flood was also followed by a landslide that killed 2 people and destroyed a utility pole.

“Tonight, the flood caused blackout in Culamega. The road is also difficult to drive on. Four out of five casualties are from this sub-district. ACT, BPBD and SAR joint team has collected the data on the evacuees. Most of them evacuated to their relatives’ houses who are not affected by flood,” said Fauzi.

He added that his team was coordinating with BPBD and SAR to obtain data on the needs of evacuees. The team will be headquartered in the post in Cipatujuah sub-district.

“Insha Allah, we will set up a post in Culamega. There will be five additional personnel from Masyarakat Telawan Indonesia (MRI) Bandung. We have collected the data on what the evacuees direly need to make the aid distribution from the post easier,” added Fauzi.

According to him, at the moment, the evacuees need prepared meals, clothes, blankets, medicines, personal hygiene kits. Steam cleaners are also needed to clean the houses and public buildings. []
