ACTNews, JAKARTA – Global Wakaf-ACT through Productive Agricultural Waqf Program (WSP) aimed to assists farmers in realizing the nation’s food sovereignty. Renaldi Daniel from Global Wakaf-ACT program department said that WSP intervenes in three aspects, namely agricultural technology, business capital, and crops purchased by ACT.

“ First, agricultural technology interventions to increase production. Second, business capital for production needs such as buying fertilizers and seeds. Third, we guarantee the purchase of unhulled rice at a price that is profitable for farmers,” said Daniel in the Humanity Talk, Tuesday (3/23/2021).

In terms of agricultural technology, it focuses not only on the usage of production tools, but also the seed selection and fertilization process. “ In WSP program, the seed used is HMS700,  wherein one panicle has 700 fascicles. So the potential yield is up to 12 tons higher,” he said.

Daniel continued that the use of fertilizers must be precise because, lately, fertilizers have been difficult to get. Although subsidized fertilizers were available, only a few farmers have access to them.

“Therefore, Global Wakaf-ACT has prepared to guarantee the availability of fertilizers so that farmers can focus on planting and taking care of the rice until harvest time,” continued Daniel.

The target for the total land area is to expand to 100-500 hectares. Even by 2025, the WSP program is expected to cover 5 million hectares of rice fields. Furthermore, the WSP program is expected to attract millennials to become farmers. The assumption that being farmers is an out-of-date profession can change with the use of different agricultural techniques.

“ This has already been started by cooperating with students in Islamic boarding schools. Apart from religious studies, students were also educated to master agricultural cultivation,” he added.
