ACTNews, BALIKPAPAN – A fire devoured a densely populated residential area in Gunung Bugis, West Balikpapan, Balikpapan City, Saturday (6/5/2021). Based on the data collected by the volunteers of Masyarakat Relawan Indonesia-ACT East Kalimantan, the majority of houses made of wood caused the fire to spread easily to the point of burning dozens of houses in three RTs inhabited by dozens of families.

Responding to the disaster, ACT didn’t only send their MRI team for assessment but also provided urgent assistance including meal packages. The meal package distribution was an effort to support the survivors amid a disaster situation.

“In addition to meal packages, ACT and MRI volunteers also distributed cleaning tools and school equipment,” said Abd Khaidir Ali from ACT East Kalimantan Program Team.

Apart from humanitarian aid, MRI-ACT volunteers also joined the residents to clean up the fire site which left charred debris after the fire. The total loss due to this fire has yet to be ascertained, but many residents have lost a lot of properties and are currently in need of assistance.

For information, the fire that occurred near midnight not only burned the settlement and properties but also killed one victim.[]
