HMS – ACT: Balanced Nutrition Can Help Strengthen Immune System Against Diseases

ACTNews, SOUTH JAKARTA — As the COVID-19 cases begin to surge again, it is important for us to have a balanced nutritional intake. Hanum Aulia, a Humanity Medical Services – Aksi Cepat Tanggap (HMS – ACT) nutritionist said nutritious food is important to boost our immune system.

“Of course, to avoid severe symptoms of COVID-19, we must get a full dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Maintaining strict health protocols is also important to prevent transmission. After you have taken these measures, the next step is to have a balanced diet. We must have nutritionally-balanced meals which contain carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, fat, minerals, fiber, and water,” said Hanum.

A balanced plate of meal can consist of rice or corn as the source of carbohydrates, red meat, chicken, or fish as the source of protein and fat, vegetables such as carrots and spinach, beans, and fruits to provide us with vitamins and minerals. In addition, being properly hydrated by having enough water is also important.

“In order for our immune system to be able to protect us from diseases, it needs to be strong. To strengthen it, it needs the essential nutrients from our food. It cannot be strong if we only consume one type of food,” she explained.

Hanum mentioned that each part of our body system complements and supports one another. “Taking multivitamins every day during the pandemic is not a good way to strengthen our immune system because it may lead to hypervitaminosis or the excessive amount of vitamins in our body that can cause nausea, vomiting, frequent urination, dizziness, weakness and can also interfere with kidney function. We can get our vitamins from food,” she concluded. []
