Israel Assaults Worshippers in Al-Aqsa, Closes Entrances

ACTNews, JERUSALEM – Al-Aqsa Compound was filled with the shouting of Muslim worshippers who were expelled from the Sacred Compound. They strongly protested against the violations of their right to worship in Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli police. Once again, the situation around the Sacred Compound escalates.

On Tuesday (3/12) afternoon, Israeli police closed all the entrances to Al-Aqsa Mosque, including the Damascus Gate that connects the Sacred Compound to the Old City. All worshippers, including women and children, were forcibly expelled.

Firas Al-Dibs, spokesman of for Jerusalem's Religious Endowments Authority, stated that baton-wielding police attacked dozens of Muslim worshippers near the Al-Aqsa compound's Dome of the Rock.

"At least five Palestinians were arrested before being taken into custody for further investigation," al-Dibs said.

He added that dozens of Israeli soldiers stormed the Al-Aqsa compound and assaulted several religious figures, including Al-Aqsa Mosque's Director Omar Kiswani and Sheikh Wasef al-Bakri, the acting supreme judge of Jerusalem's Islamic Courts.

According to the locals, the closure of Al-Aqsa Compound happened after a fire broke out at a police station. The Israeli Police was caused by a Molotov cocktail. The clash between the Palestinian worshippers and Israeli Police was inevitable.

Since the recent month, the tension in Al-Aqsa Compound has been rising. The entrances to Al-Aqsa Mosque has been repeatedly closed by Israeli authority, especially Al-Rahma Gate, causing massive protests by Muslim worshippers.

Apart from closing the entrances to Al-Aqsa Compound, Israel has also committed human rights and international law violations. These violations were committed especially after the beginning of the Great March of Return in March 2018. []
