What to do when a landslide happens
Erry Saptadi of Disaster Management Institute of Indonesia (DMII)’s Training, Education and Development Division explained that there are several things that can be done when a landslide occurs. First, stay alert and wake up the whole family. Many landslides happen when most people are fast asleep.
"Get out immediately from the path of the landslide or debris flow," explained Erry when contacted Monday (9/20/2021).
He added, if it is impossible to escape, get down and protect your head. This position will provide the best protection for the body.
Next, observe your surroundings. if there is a flow of mud or mud mixed with rocks, be prepared for a big landslide to occur. Prepare to evacuate as soon as possible when a sudden change in the water flows, or if the previously clear water becomes suddenly cloudy.
“This sudden change indicates landslide activity at the top. Don't wait, save yourself," he said.
When evacuating, carefully avoid cracked roads, for it can cause additional landslides.
"Identify potential risks and hazards around your family and immediately make a mitigation plan so that all family members are protected from disasters," said Erry.
