ACTNews, BALI — A magnitude 4.8 earthquake occurred in Karangasem Regency, Bali on Saturday (10/16/2021) at 4 a.m. Central Indonesia Time, followed by a magnitude 3.8 aftershock. The earthquakes whose hypocenter is located at the depth of 10 kilometers were felt in Denpasar and Lombok.
Videos received by ACTNews show that the earthquake causes severe damages to a house in Ban Village in Kubu District, Karangasem Regency. The roof of the house collapsed and the wooden truss was shattered. The walls of the houses were also reduced to ruins.
During the earthquake, the windows and doors rattled. The tremors felt like a large truck passes by. Several sanggahs (family temples) in Karangasem Regency of Bali were damaged. Several villages in Bali were affected by the earthquake, including Pempatan Village in Rendang District and Tianyar Village in Kubu District.
Until this news is written, 3 residents were reportedly killed. The estimated amount of material losses and damages is still unknown.
Ni'matul Arofah from Aksi Cepat Tanggap (ACT) Bali said the ACT Bali Emergency Response team immediately rushed to the location to conduct assessments and hand over several kinds of assistance.
"We are conducting an assessment, and we have sent some urgently needed assistance," she said, Saturday (10/16/2021).
Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) explained on its official website that the earthquake that occurred showed no potential for a tsunami considering its shallow hypocenter.
"By taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow earthquake caused by local fault activity," BMKG wrote.
