Nahera Receives Small Salary Despite Teaching for Decades

"I've been teaching for 33 years. In the beginning, the salary was IDR 50,000 per month, then it rose to IDR 150,000 per month, but sometimes paid every three months or five months. Now it's increased to IDR 25,000 per day," said Nahera, an honorary teacher from Sungai Beliung, Pontianak.

ACTNews, PONTIANAK – On Thursday (6/24/2021), Global Zakat-ACT conveyed the mandate from the donors to an honorary teacher named Nahera in Sungai Beliung Village, West Pontianak District, Pontianak. The ACT team came directly to her residence. The honorary teacher has been staying for nine days at home because the doctor diagnosed her with a mild stroke.

Every Monday, Nahera has to go to the hospital to treat her illness. Some of the medical expenses are covered by health insurance. For nutritious food and transportation to and from the hospital, Nahera has to spend her own money.

"Hopefully, I will recover soon. I don't know how to pay the medical expenses if I suffer from this illness for a long time," Nahera said.

Nahera is an honorary teacher at an Islamic Elementary School in Sungai Beliung Village. She has been teaching for 33 years. Since becoming a teacher, her salary has changed, starting from IDR 50 thousand to IDR 150 thousand per month, but sometimes paid every three months or five months. Now, Nahera receives a daily salary of of IDR 25,000.

Alhamdulillah, I receive a salary of IDR 25 thousand per day after the school has developed,” she said.

She is grateful for her small salary because she teaches with sincerity. She will feel proud every time the students she teaches gain achievements.

Nircho Dwi Anggoro from the Global Zakat-ACT Program team in West Kalimantan said that the assistance from the Friend of Indonesian Teacher program was very well received by Nahera. She also expressed her gratitude. Nahera plans to use it to pay for her ongoing treatment.[]
