JAKARTA – The potential for zakat collection in Indonesia is massive. Badan Amil Zakat National (BAZNAS)
estimated that the potential
zakat funds in Indonesia in 2019 alone reached IDR 233.84 trillion. Of this
amount, the largest portion was the professional zakat with potential funds
of IDR 139.07 trillion. In addition, according to the 2021
Indonesia Zakat Outlook, the potential zakat funds in Indonesia in 2020
alone reached IDR 327.6 trillion.
In reality, the
collection of professional zakat in Indonesia in 2020 was still not optimal
with only IDR 71.4 trillion or around 21.7 of the total potential zakat funds
collected. Indonesian Vice President Ma'ruf Amin stated that the reality of the zakat
collection is still far from the huge potential of zakat in Indonesia.
"Of all this
potential, the joint research by BAZNAS and various other institutions stated
that there were around IDR 61.258 trillion in Zakat, Infaq, and Sadaqah collection
that did not go through official Zakat Management Organizations in 2020.
Nationally, in 2019, the collection of Zakat, Infaq, and Sadaqah through
official Zakat Management Organizations only reached IDR. 10.2. trillion,"
he said.
The collection of professional
zakat, on the other hand, continues to increase annually but not significantly.
In 2017,
the collection of professional zakat amounted to IDR 2,785,208,957,779. In 2018,
it increased to IDR 3,302,249,700,640, and 2019
saw another increase with IDR 3,951,113,706,297 collected.
According to INDEF
economist Bhima Yudhistira, the collection professional zakat is a good
step because it plays a role in controlling poverty, especially now that the
poverty rate has soared due to the Covid-19 pandemic. "It (poverty) will be
controlled if the collection of professional zakat is optimal," he said.
