ACTNews, SOUTH JAKARTA – In remote areas of Indonesia, far from the hustle and bustle of the capital city of Jakarta, many Muslim preachers live in poverty. Yet, it never stops them from continuously teaching Islam to their surroundings.

Global Zakat – ACT managed to gather a few stories of their struggle. They serve to us as a reminder of the power of sincerity and steadfastness.

One of these preachers is Ustazah Jasma (24) who lives in Batualu Village in Tana Toraja Regency with her husband. Their home is made of wooden boards and zinc walls.

Every day, she walks for one kilometer to teach the Quran voluntarily. Her students are children of Muslim converts.

Another sincere Muslim preacher who works relentlessly is Ustaz Ujang Mahmudin, a Quran teacher from Cikalemeneng Hamlet in Karangmulya Village, Karangpawitan District, Garut Regency.

To make ends meet, he does not rely on teaching his fifty students. Instead, he works as a kiddie ride operator.

“I work in the morning and go home in the afternoon to teach. I make around IDR50,000,” said Ustaz Ujang.

In Central Java, there is Ustazah Lis who teaches women and children to recite every letter of the Quran. She visits every house by bicycle from one village to another to teach.

“I never charge them. For families who are poor, I teach them for free. I really believe that Allah is our sustainer, and he will bless me and my family, and provide sustenance from ways that we won’t expect,” said Ustazah Los.

During the dry season, she never stops her job even when the sun is scorching hot. And when it rains heavily, she keeps on riding her bike to visit her students even when her umbrella flies away. At night, she keeps riding her bike to teach although the headlight of her bicycle is too dim to light her way.

To help these preachers, you can visit the Indonesia Dermawan website and donate to help them through the National Movement for Indonesian Preachers’ Prosperity. Global Zakat – ACT supports preachers by providing financial aid and staple food packages. []
