ACTNews, DEMAK
– Demak is known as the City of Saints and was once a beacon of Islamic preaching
led by the legendary Wali Songo (Nine Muslim Saints). Demak’s strong Islamic
history has inspired Ustaz Kusaeni (42) to teach the children in his village of
Kedungori, Dempet District, Demak Regency, Islamic sciences. He wants them to
live based on Islamic teaching like the Nine Muslim Saints hundreds of years
ago.
To make his wish
come true, he founded a boarding school in 2006 which he named Anwarul Quran. “I
named it Anwarul Quran Islamic
Boarding School which means the Lights of the Quran. I hope that the students
can memorize the Quran and live based on its teaching,” said Ustaz Kusaeni when
ACT Semarang met him, Tuesday (10/26/2021)
He built the
school out of wooden and bamboo boards. The fifty-four students that Ustaz
Kusaeni teaches are not required to pay. For the students’ food, he runs the farmland that he owns.
“Most of the
students come from poor families and are orphans. What matters most to me is
the students’ enthusiasm and spirit to memorize the Quran,” he said.
He also works as
an honorary teacher at a madrasa, earning IDR 500,000 a month. From this
salary, he supports his family and covers the pesantren’s operational costs.
To further
encourage and support Ustaz Kusaeni, Global Zakat – ACT provides financial
assistance through National Movement for Indonesian Preachers’ Prosperity, a
joint program between Aksi Cepat Tanggap and Indonesian Ulama Council. []
