Warm Meal Packages Bring Happiness to Gazan Children with Down Syndrome

ACTNews, GAZA – For forty consecutive days, Aksi Cepat Tanggap (ACT)’s Indonesian Public Kitchen in Gaza has been operating. Since October 29, thousands of packages of rice and chicken are cooked every day to be given to the Gazans who live in crisis.

On Tuesday (12/4) morning, thousands of packages of rice were sent to a center for people with down syndrome in Gaza. Local ACT volunteers brought all the packages from the public kitchen.

In a hall, children were gathered. Their smiles radiated very brightly. Their eyes were glimmering with curiosity of the shiny aluminum food trays brought by the volunteers. The food trays contained warm rice and chicken for the children to savor. They could not contain their happiness, so much so that Amir*, one of the children, kissed the hand and cheek of a volunteer as a form of gratitude.

The Down Syndrome Center is an institution that takes care of people with Down Syndrome throughout Gaza. They house up to hundreds of people with Down Syndrome in Gaza.

Ahmad Alhelo, Manager of the Down Syndrome Center, expressed his gratefulness for the food packages. “Thank you ACT and the people of Indonesia for their generosity for the Palestinians, especially we the people of Gaza,” he said.

On Tuesday (12/4), the volunteers also distributed food packages to poor areas in Beit Hanoun. There, the children had been waiting for volunteers. They stood in their doorways. Wrapped in their sweaters, they ran towards the volunteers that brought the food packages.

The distribution of the meals from Indonesian Public Kitchen is an act of sympathy from the people of Indonesia for the people of Gaza who have been living in blockade. With the coming of winter, Indonesian Public Kitchen in Gaza becomes one of ACT’s main programs in the last three months of 2018.

“Indonesian Public Kitchen is still serving the people of Gaza this winter. Since the beginning of this program in late October, as many as 44,206 packages of prepared meals have been distributed to areas throughout Gaza,” stated Andi Noor Faradiba of Global Humanity Response (GHR) – ACT, Tuesday (12/11).

Along with meal packages distribution, ACT also distributes winter gears and blankets for the Gazans. According to online weather sites, the temperature in Gaza reaches 16-21⁰ Celsius with occasional rains showering the area. []
