A Look at the Limited Life of Selat Desa Islanders

Selat Desa Island in Ngenang Administrative Village, Nongsa District, Batam is home to 45 families, most of whom are Muslim converts from Suku Laut Tribe. Boats and canoes are the main transportation there. For years, the people of Selat Desa have been deprived of adequate education and health facilities. In addition, electricity is also scarce, with diesel-fueled electric generators running only from 6 to 10 p.m. It is an irony despite the overhead line that stretches over the island to supply electricity to Batam and Bintan islands.
